From Sentimental Spaces to Seamless Living: A Whole-Home Transformation in Winter Park

Renovating a home is always a meaningful process—but when that home is filled with childhood memories, the stakes are even higher. This Winter Park renovation was more than a design-build project for KBF Design Gallery; it was a deeply personal transformation that required equal parts vision, expertise, and empathy.

Our client came to us with a mix of excitement and hesitation. She wanted to modernize the home she grew up in, but like many homeowners in similar situations, she was understandably concerned about losing its character. Our role was to guide her through that uncertainty—helping her reimagine what the home could be while honoring what it had always meant to her.

Reimagining the Floor Plan for Modern Living

One of the most impactful aspects of this renovation was the complete reconfiguration of the home’s layout. The original floor plan featured a series of closed-off rooms, including a walled dining room and a segmented living area that limited both natural light and flow.

To bring the home into a more modern era, we removed multiple interior walls and reshaped the entire main living space. The entry, dining room, living room, and kitchen were all reimagined into one cohesive, open-concept environment.

At the heart of this transformation is a massive kitchen island, designed not only as a focal point but as a functional hub for gathering, entertaining, and everyday living. The kitchen now seamlessly connects to an inviting dining space and a comfortable living area, creating a natural flow throughout the home. Adjacent to this, we incorporated an eating area with a built-in bar, adding both convenience and a touch of elevated hospitality.

The result is a space that feels expansive, connected, and filled with light—perfectly suited for both quiet mornings and lively gatherings.

Creating a True Primary Suite

A key priority for this project was enhancing the functionality and comfort of the primary suite. The existing layout lacked a true en-suite experience, so we took a bold and transformative approach.

We converted the fourth bedroom into a spacious, spa-like primary bathroom, completely redefining how the homeowner experiences her private retreat. To make this new layout work seamlessly, we moved walls and reconfigured doorways, creating direct access to the new bathroom from the primary bedroom—an essential element in establishing a true en-suite.

The original primary bathroom, no longer needed in its previous form, was thoughtfully transformed into a large walk-in closet. This change not only maximized storage but also elevated the overall functionality and luxury of the suite.

Together, these updates turned a once-standard bedroom and bath arrangement into a cohesive, high-end primary suite designed for comfort, privacy, and daily ease.

Elevated Details Throughout the Home

Beyond the structural changes, this renovation included a full update of finishes and features throughout the home. From the kitchen and bathrooms to flooring, lighting, and fixtures, every detail was carefully selected to reflect a timeless yet modern aesthetic.

We also replaced windows, doors, and the garage door, improving both the home’s curb appeal and energy efficiency. At the rear of the home, we added a screened-in porch, extending the living space outdoors and creating the perfect setting for relaxing or entertaining year-round.

A Fully Furnished, Turnkey Experience

To complete the transformation, our in-house interior design team furnished the entire home—inside and out. Working closely with the client, they curated pieces that aligned with her style while complementing the home’s new architecture and flow.

The final installation day delivered a true “reveal” moment—one that felt straight out of a home design show. Every detail was in place, from furniture to finishing touches, creating a space that felt instantly like home.

Like many large-scale renovations, this project required trust—especially in the early stages when the proposed changes felt significant. By listening closely, communicating clearly, and guiding the client every step of the way, we were able to turn initial hesitation into complete confidence.

Today, the home stands as a perfect blend of past and present: a place where cherished memories remain, but new ones can be made in a space designed for the way we live today.
