The Remodeling Story
They left for Scotland. The kitchen transformed while they were gone.
This sweet family moved into their Winter Springs home in 2020, but after a few years they still weren’t sure how to make certain spaces work for their lifestyle. So when they planned an extended trip to Scotland, they handed the reins to our team — and trusted us fully to bring their vision to life while they were away.
Their only two requests: dark cabinetry and countertops, and a kitchen that felt undeniably “cool.”
Drawing on the European charm of New Orleans — one of their favorite cities — we built a palette that blends old-world character with modern sophistication.
The dark brief could have gone heavy. It didn’t, because every deep surface got a counterweight: near-black cabinetry against a white arabesque backsplash threaded with brass; a curved, metal-strapped hood that reads like ironwork; brass lantern pendants over a taupe quartzite island; a copper apron-front sink and copper-toned faucets warming all that shadow; glass-front uppers keeping the tall runs from going solid.
The result is a space that feels rich, layered, and uniquely theirs — old-world in its references, current in its function, and exactly as cool as they asked for.

Can you really remodel while the owners are away?
This project is the proof: the family left for Scotland and came home to the finished kitchen. What makes it work is the design phase — every decision, selection, and detail locked before demolition, so construction needs execution, not daily homeowner rulings.
How do you keep a dark kitchen from feeling like a cave?
Counterweights. Here the near-black cabinetry plays against a white backsplash, glass-front uppers, lighter stone, and warm metals — so the darkness reads as depth, not gloom. Dark done well is a lighting-and-contrast plan, not just a paint pick.
Is it safe to mix copper and brass in one kitchen?
Yes — deliberately. Copper at the sink, brass in the lanterns and hardware: they share warmth and age gracefully together. The rule is commitment; scattered accidental metals read as chaos, a planned pair reads as character.
What is quartzite, and why use it on a dark island?
A natural stone, sealed for kitchen duty, with depth engineered surfaces struggle to imitate. This taupe slab softens the dark base and hides daily wear — the practical choice that happens to be the beautiful one.
